Justice League #1 Review « Thread Started on Jul 30, 2008, 1:19pm »
Finally, the Justice League has come back to DCA!
I really felt that Gru captured the identity of the AMU perfectly. It was nice to see these fundamental differences revealed to better understand the AMU and the basis for the arc and why the JL is there. The fact that the Leaguer's there are unable to wrap their minds around not just the different laws of the world they were on but the different natural laws of the universe was a great touch to explore what makes them true heroes. And letting Ray be the one to summarize those laws was a nice touch to showcase just how smart The Atom is. I liked how it wasn't Batman acting like that scenes crutch.
Another nice touch I liked was J'onn's observation about the cleanliness of the Gotham City he was in. I know this wasn't a detail established in the comics but something Gru made up to create more contrast between this Gotham and our own and show the differences with what's allowed under dictoral rule and not.
I liked Gru's choice of Leaguer's to use for this arc. Each are detectives in their own right that offer a differing variety of skills and knowledge. Not were just The Atom and Martian Manhunter allowed to be smart, but so was Plastic Man in a scene with the AMU Lex Luthor. With barely scratching the surface about what their plot is it was teased well enough with well placed mystery and humor to keep my interest for the next issue.
I just had some confusion over the AMU Luthor's name. I thought he prefered Alexander Luthor, but in a chat with Jamie he revealed that in other stories outside of Grant Morrison's EARTH 2 story he was called Lex.
For those expecting JL grand battles this isn't the issue for it. Ray/J'onn's arc served to build the foundation for understanding the AMU and offer brief facts about it. The real story for them won't start until #2 when they get involved in some conspiracy to dethrone the CSA.
The Lex/Pastic Man scene offered the most intrigue even though it was far shorter than the other scenes. Fortunately they get more focus next issue to satisfy the interest created.

I really like how Ray Palmer was portrayed in this issue as well. I've always thought that Ray Palmer was the closest thing to a Reed Richards that the DC Universe has.
